As John Adams said, the United States of America must have “a government of laws, and not of men.”

The Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia (“WBA”) takes seriously its mission to maintain the honor and integrity of the legal profession and to promote the administration of justice. To that end, the WBA cannot and will not remain silent in the face of attacks against the lawmaking branch of the United States Government and, indeed, attacks against the rule of law itself.

The WBA condemns the armed insurrection that occurred yesterday at the United States Capitol, the seat of the lawmaking branch of the United States Government.

The WBA condemns the actions of the President of the United States, who fomented and encouraged this violence, and who expressed and broadcast his “love” for the armed insurrectionists even as they still roamed and terrorized the grounds of the United States Capitol.

The WBA condemns all those who fomented and encouraged this violence, including lawyers, lawmakers, and other public officials whose oaths demand they uphold the United States Constitution and the rule of law.
The WBA condemns all those who have abused the judicial system in an attempt to validate baseless, unfounded, and unproven allegations against a demonstrably safe, secure, and accurate election.

The WBA demands the following immediate actions.

The President of the United States must be held accountable. He must no longer be allowed to lead the government he encouraged others to attack.

The armed insurrectionists, barely any of whom were arrested during the attack, must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The lawmakers and public officials who abused their power and defiled their oaths of office must resign or be expelled from their positions.

The lawyers who abused the judicial system with frivolous lawsuits aimed at undermining the integrity of the election must face disciplinary action from their licensing bars, including disbarment where appropriate.

A national commission must be established to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding yesterday’s armed insurrection, including law enforcement’s preparedness for and immediate response to the attack.

The WBA is committed to ensuring that the legal profession upholds its obligations to the rule of law, and holds accountable all those responsible for yesterday’s abhorrent and violent insurrection.
